According to foreign media reports, Volkswagen's vision for future cars includes the production of autonomous vehicles that can be traded on behalf of owners through crypto wallets. Previously, it was just a rumor. Now, the person in charge of Volkswagen blockchain has confirmed this vision again.

Since August last year, Benjamin Sinram has been responsible for Volkswagen's blockchain project. He said: "We hope that autonomous vehicle can provide services for owners, and can automatically pay for such services with their own money. Blockchain technology is very attractive because it can make transactions very transparent and remain immutable." Sinram's blockchain team works with various business departments of the Volkswagen family, including Porsche, the luxury car company of the Volkswagen Group, and its financial services department.
Volkswagen's project involves a service called Digital CarPass, which is a report service that uses distributed ledger technology to ensure the reliability of vehicle data such as mileage. In order to support the development of this technology, the public chose to cooperate with the non-profit organization located in Berlin and one of the most famous organizations in the field of encryption - IOTA Foundation. Sinram said that the CarPass service will be launched in early 2019.
In addition, Sinram proposed another project focusing on recording software codes embedded in specific vehicles. He gave an example: "Once a vehicle accident occurs, blockchain technology will allow us to record and prove the current software version of the vehicle, and we have public evidence of complete data." This technology can also avoid similar events such as the diesel emission cheating scandal that the company has experienced before. In this scandal, Volkswagen admitted that it has programmed the engines of some test models to make their emissions lower than the real emissions.
